Dolet, Etienne

Dolet, Etienne
(1509-1546)
   humanist, printer
Born in Orléans, Etienne Dolet was a leading French humanist. He produced commentaries on the ancient authors and the Latin language (Com-mentarii linguae latinae, 1536-38), as well as editions of clément marot and françois rabelais, and was an ardent defender of religious toleration and of the French language. Dolet also worked with other humanists, such as bonaventure des périers. Because of his free spirit and his activities, Doret was condemned to the stake for heresy and atheism.
